6 Tips for More Motivated Employees

One of the best ways to ensure your business continues to get better each year is to make sure you have motivated employees. Unfortunately, all the positive speeches and successful sales marks in the world don’t always equal satisfied workers who are motivated to keep going.

Instead, it’s about establishing the right culture within your company. Employees who are content and motivated will be more willing to get the job done efficiently and effectively.

Unfortunately, about 53% of American workers admit that they’re unhappy at work. The stress of the workplace environment can lead to a lack of productivity, and your business is only as good as the passion your workers put into it.

So, what can you do to keep your employees happy and motivated? Let’s look at a few tips you should implement into your office culture right away.

  1. Create a Comfortable Environment

Let’s face it, no one wants to work in a stark, empty, uninviting environment. Corporations like Amazon and Google have the right idea in offering their employees a pleasant place to work. Google, for example, gives its employees free food, has an onsite gym and massage therapists, too.

Now, Google is one of the biggest corporations in the world. Obviously, you don’t have to meet their standards with your smaller business. But, making sure your office is a comfortable working space for your employees is important. Invest in things like proper air conditioning and heating, a worker’s lounge, and maybe even an outdoor courtyard for your employees to get some fresh air and activity during the day.

Additionally, you can spruce up the place with the simplest of touches, including unique artwork and furniture. Don’t be afraid to let your creative side shine when making your office a place where people actually want to be.

  1. Gamify and Offer Incentives

Everyone likes rewards. One way to keep your employees motivated is to “gamify” some of your strategies. If everyone has a certain quota to meet each month, turn it into a friendly competition, or offer rewards for those who excel at reaching their regular goals.

When people know they’re going to be rewarded for their efforts, they’re more likely to do a good job and work harder on seeing things through until the end. Even if they don’t necessarily “win” this month, keeping incentive programs in place can encourage healthy competition and a drive for success that remains consistent throughout the year.

  1. Offer Opportunities for Growth

It’s important for employees to feel trusted and respected, and simply saying such things isn’t always enough. No one wants to step into an employment position with the knowledge that they could be stuck there forever. People naturally want to grow, get better, and be given more responsibilities.

Not only do opportunities for growth typically offer more money (which is a huge motivator, of course), but there are also psychological aspects that can impact someone to work harder if they know they can “move up.”

Look for growth opportunities in your business, whether you’re opening a second location or you need a new manager for a group or project. By giving your employees opportunities to shine and take on more responsibilities, they’ll feel respected and they’ll want to ensure the trust you’ve given them isn’t taken for granted.

  1. Give Praise When It’s Due

Some employers might argue that positive feedback is a waste of time. If someone does their job correctly, that’s what’s expected of them. But, people, in general, need positive feedback and praise in order to stay motivated.

Even when an employee knows they’re good at their job, it’s different when they hear it from a manager or CEO. Letting your employees know they’ve done something good will give them satisfaction and the motivation to keep up that standard. If you work in a company where employees work directly with customers, be sure to pass on any positive customer feedback, too. It feels great knowing you can make someone’s day, so sharing a good customer experience can encourage your employees to keep providing quality service.

  1. Be Flexible With Scheduling

Working remotely has become increasingly popular in recent years, thanks to advancements in technology. In fact, in 2019, 43% of Americans worked from home at least once in a while.

A flexible work schedule or a work-from-home option is becoming something that employees look for when they’re seeking out jobs. As an employer, you might be hesitant to offer that kind of flexibility, thinking that it could hinder productivity. On the contrary, employees who are offered more flexible schedules are typically less-stressed and more motivated. When they feel comfortable in their working environment and without such a rigid schedule, they’re more likely to do quality work, rather than feeling rushed or forced.

  1. Talk to Your Employees

Do your research when it comes to what employees really want. Having a strong benefits package is important, but when it comes to the actual workplace, everyone has their preferences. See what other companies are doing to create a comfortable and positive office culture.

Then, ask your own employees! Talk to them personally to learn what would keep them happier and more motivated at work. Even just showing that you care about their needs and wants can go a long way in their willingness to do a good job for your business.

While you may not be able to answer every request and make every “wish” happen in the office, there are always areas where improvements can be made, even on a small scale.

As you can see from these tips, the underlying theme is respect and appreciation. It doesn’t take much for your employees to have a greater value for your business if you show them how important they are to its growth and success. Let them know how much their hard work and dedication means on a regular basis. In return, you’re more likely to see continued success, a calmer work environment, and an increase in employee retention.
